Grade One
Book Worms!

"We're literacy obsessed!"
Welcome to our classroom

1. Personal Space: This is where the students' personal bins are kept.
2. Proud Wall: This is where students' work is published; the students help the teacher co-select the pieces they want to display and is a great way for teachers, parents and students to track progress and celebrate achievement.
3. Teacher Storage: This area is for the teacher to store materials (mainly art).
4. SmartBoard
5. Teacher's Chair
6. Topic Shelf: Front-facing books for the unit of study, or high-interest on a class-wide basis.
7. Browsing Book Bins: Front-facing books grouped by level and sometimes series or genre.
8. Reading Nook: This area has comfortable chairs, the students' "just right" book bags, and the charts and big books. There is also a shelf that holds the reading material for our centres.
9. Teacher's Desk
10. Teacher Storage Cabinet
11. High Frequency Word Wall: Close to the group table which is used for guided reading
12. Writing and Language: This is where the reading and writing folders for workshops are kept. There are also toolboxes that hold all the materials needed for workshops (ex., fluency phones, finger pointers).
13. Homework Tools: This is where the home books are kept, as well as the bins for students to hand in any notes or permission slips from home.
14. Juicy Word Wall: The vocabulary words that are meaningful, but more complex than high frequency words, are above the homework bins. These words relate to units of study, or are learned in vocabulary lessons. They have pictoral representations beside them, as they are mostly oral vocabulary.
15. Group Tables: Children are divided into four table groups. Each group has a table helper who is responsible for bringing all the materials over during workshops.
